In Discovery, we are adding a brand new weapon type, Scythes. This is a two-handed weapon that offers Melee, Magic and Healing all wrapped up into a single weapon. Hybrid arche-types classes have always been restrictive, with some like healing/magic being simply impossible. We aim to change this, and open more options to hybrid players as a whole.

Scythes

The initial release of Scythes will be limited to crafted and Hasla Emerald versions. This means that on the launch of 1.3.6, you will be able to craft from Illustrious all the way to Ayanad. The Hasla Emerald Scythe also exists, and will be an option for new, returning or curious players that want to try out this new weapon type, requiring an Infused Emerald just like any other emerald weapon. The exact details of the crafted Scythe recipes will become available in 1.3.6, however you can expect them to use similar materials to other two-handed weapons such as Staves, Greatclubs or Greatswords.

Weapon Stats

Scythes are a brand new weapon type that will be added to ArcheAge Classic in 1.3.6. They are two-handed, and offer Melee Attack, Magic Attack, and Healing Power all on a single weapon. This type of weapon has been designed around catering to a part of ArcheAge that has always been underdeveloped, hybrid classes. Though obsidian versions of katanas and shortspears attempted to do this before, there has never been a hybrid option in the two-handed weapon types, nor for a magic and healing combination. Now, with scythes, this is possible. Scythes do come with the drawback of not offering nearly as much Melee Attack, Magic Attack or Healing Power as their dedicated options, they offer more than enough to be viable options for players looking to mix archetypes. This means, for the first time since ArcheAge Alpha, we will see healing mages roaming Erenor, alongside two-handed melees with substantial magic attack, and healing melees that are not restricted to shortspears.

The following stat distribution of crafted Scythes are available:

  • Autumn (Str, Int, Spi)
  • Meteor (Str, Spi)
  • Sunset (Str, Int)
  • Meadow (Int, Spi)
  • Wave (Int)
  • Flame (Str)
  • Life (Spi)

To showcase the relative power of Scythes and how they fall in line with the other weapon types, here is an Epic Ayanad Autumn Scythe. The numbers shown are not showing any form of temper. Effectively, Scythes are 13% weaker than their non-hybrid counterparts. This cost in damage comes with the flexibility of being a hybrid weapon, along with a number of weapon proc abilities.

Weapon Proc Abilities

In addition to the three types of attack or power included on Scythes, they also have weapon procs to match. Melee and Magic both have procs that are triggered when dealing damage to targets for their respective types, and Healing has a proc when healing an ally.

"Lifesteal" - On Damage (Melee)

The wielder of the scythe heals themselves for (50 + 180% Healing Power) once on dealing melee damage. This skill is influenced by healing critical rate, critical bonus and percentage increases.

  • Chance on Hit: 20%
  • Cooldown: 30s

"Timewarp" - On Damage (Magic)

The wielder of the scythe has their Sorcery cooldowns completely reset, allowing full use of their magic arsenal again. This skill can proc from any magic damage, include damage over time effects. Cooldown reduction does not influence this proc ability's cooldown.

  • Chance on Hit: 5%
  • Cooldown: 180s

"Infusion" - On Heal (Healing)

The wielder of the scythe is filled with a mana infusion, restoring an average of 1130 mana to the player. This effect does not interrupt any ongoing effects or abilities such as Perform-tagged skills.

  • Chance on Heal: 15%
  • Cooldown: 45s

Beyond 1.3.6 - Discovery

Discovery is only the beginning for Scythes, with plans to bring Obsidian, World Boss and Dungeon variants of the weapon to ArcheAge Classic sometime in the relatively near future past 1.3.6. There will be a number of paths for the Obsidian Scythe to go down, Scythes added to dungeon loot pools, and even Scythes added to existing and new World Bosses. We are excited to continue expanding upon this weapon type. We will also be making necessary adjustments to the weapon type to ensure it is a viable option for players pursuing hybrid-archetype characters. After the release, we will be keeping an eye on the performance of the weapon type to deliver on this.

What material type are Scythes for crafting? What wisps and proficiency will they use?

The exact details of the crafted Scythe recipes will become available in 1.3.6, however you can expect them to use similar materials to other two-handed weapons such as Staves, Greatclubs or Greatswords.

How long will we have to wait for Obsidian versions?

We will be evaluating how long 2.0's development cycle will take, and from there we will decide whether to include an expansion to the available scythes before or after that. It will be a priority for us in the near future though.

Can I swap my weapon to a scythe to try it out?

Hasla Emerald Scythes will be available on release, but there will be no other mechanism for you to turn your current weapons into scythes. Everyone will have to craft their own Ayanad versions if they want to go with it.

Why does the magic proc only reset Sorcery? Why not all magic skillsets?

Sorcery was just the starting point for us, and we will see what classes people come up with to play with scythes. Potentially more skillsets could have their cooldowns added to the proc, depending on how the weapon type's balance shakes out on live ArcheAge Classic.
