The goddess of the sea put a poweful curse on that crystal. You want to be cautious with it. That kind of curse can transform a living person into a walking drowned corpse.

The more devoted a minion is to the sea goddess, the stronger her curse on that creature. The elemental you killed at Sunken Bay must've loved the sea goddess deeply to be so greatly cursed.
